Rites of Green documents the rich and wide-ranging cultures, traditions, arts, and music in Washington state. The Center for Washington Cultural Traditions (CWCT) at Humanities Washington wanted to curate a space where artists throughout WA can exhibit their work. As long-time art advocates who prioritize projects with traditionally overlooked communities, we were drawn to this project of designing a space to capture artist stories.
Through their online exhibition space, Rites of Green shares contributions from a wide spectrum of media and brings narratives from smaller communities in Washington’s history to a wider audience. August Creative was excited to build a virtual space to hold diverse artists, projects, and traditions in one space.
We designed a font, logo, and website that could hold space for a variety of cultural traditions shared through multiple mediums. From Quinceñera dresses to smoked sausage - Rites of Green shares stories of makers from around the state. In our design process, we worked closely with CWCT to understand their vision and the elements that would honor tradition, folklife, and a broad range of cultures. We created a site and exhibition place that we’re proud of - it honors the range of traditions and cultures and lets the artists’ work speak.
